  6. Where the Job at….

I recently started a course on Coursera on social media marketing and I am currently on social media Management Module. After a week on this module, I have come to realize that the social media space is different ball game entirely than what I thought it was. I have been made to understand that managing a personal account is different from managing a company, a brand or NGO social media presence. When it comes to personal account there is almost no rules or policy guiding what can be shared online which is the case of twitter users, many users post randomly stupid contents all in the name of engagements, Wetin Owo Elon Musk go cause ehnn. But in the case of A Business account, there are steps, policy, rules and trends to look out for and conversations to avoid in the social media space.

I have also come to the conclusion that a lot of social media so called influencers are only good in maximizing engagement for their personal accounts and can’t replicate that same energy with business accounts. So poor.

For knowledge sake, I decide to come up with an article that shows the difference between personal and professional social media management.

The Great Divide: Personal vs. Professional Social Media Management

In today's digital age, social media has become an essential tool for both individuals and businesses. While managing a personal social media account may seem similar to managing a company or business social media presence, there are significant differences between the two. In this article, we'll explore the key distinctions and why understanding these differences is crucial for effective social media management.

Personal Social Media Account:

  • Focus: Self-expression, networking, and personal branding

  • Content: Informal, conversational, and often spontaneous

  • Audience: Friends, family, and acquaintances

  • Goals: Build relationships, share experiences, and stay connected

  • Tone: Authentic, casual, and sometimes humorous

Company or Business Social Media Presence:

  • Focus: Brand awareness, customer engagement, and marketing

  • Content: Professional, strategic, and curated

  • Audience: Customers, clients, investors, and industry partners

  • Goals: Drive sales, generate leads, and build brand reputation

  • Tone: Professional, informative, and consistent with brand voice

Key Differences:

  1. Purpose: Personal accounts focus on self-expression, while business accounts focus on achieving specific marketing objectives.

  2. Content Strategy: Personal accounts often feature spontaneous posts, while business accounts require a planned content calendar.

  3. Tone and Voice: Personal accounts can be casual and humorous, while business accounts must maintain a professional tone.

  4. Audience Engagement: Personal accounts focus on building relationships, while business accounts aim to drive sales and customer engagement.

  5. Metrics and Analytics: Business accounts require tracking engagement metrics and adjusting strategies accordingly, while personal accounts may not need such formal analysis.

Conclusion:

If you're interested in becoming a social media manager, focus on developing these skills and building a strong portfolio that showcases your expertise, rather than solely focusing on growing your personal following.

Managing a personal social media account and a company or business social media presence require different approaches, strategies, and mindsets. Understanding these differences is essential for effective social media management, whether you're an individual or a business. By recognizing the unique goals, content strategies, and audience engagement techniques for each, you can optimize your social media presence and achieve your desired outcomes.

Nigerians Representing Foreign Countries in International Competitions

Nigeria, a country with a rich cultural heritage and a plethora of talented individuals, has witnessed a growing trend of its indigenes representing foreign countries in various sports. This phenomenon has raised eyebrows and sparked conversations about national identity, loyalty, and the state of sports development in Nigeria.

In this current Olympic games, the number of athletes who are Nigerians or have a Nigerian background are much. and surprisingly they are not even representing Nigeria in the Olympic games.

Reasons for this Trend

  • Lack of opportunities: Many Nigerian athletes face limited opportunities, inadequate facilities, and insufficient support from the government and sports authorities, leading them to seek greener pastures abroad.

  • Better resources and infrastructure: Foreign countries often provide superior training facilities, coaching, and financial support, making it easier for athletes to excel and achieve their goals.

  • Dual citizenship: Some Nigerian athletes hold dual citizenship, allowing them to represent their adopted countries and access better opportunities.

  • Corruption: it is no surprise, the amount of corruption in the Nigeria sport federation. there have been several cases of athletes complaining about the corruption in Nigeria sport federation, leaving them with no other choice than to avoid representing Nigeria or perhaps represent other countries.

Examples:

  • Ezinne Okparaebo : A sprinter competing for Norway. Born in Nigeria. she has been one of Norway top sprinters for years and continues to make her mark on the international stage

  • Yemisi Ogunleye: she is currently a German shot putter. she won gold medal in the shot put at the 2024 Paris Olympic with 20.00 meters in the last. she is another Nigerian representing a foreign country in the big stage. and mind you, Nigerian athletes representing Nigeria are yet to win a medal in this Olympic games.

The list will only keep growing year after year, if Nigeria as a country continues to fail its athletes.

Implications:

  • Loss of talent: Nigeria misses out on the opportunity to showcase its talented athletes on the global stage.

  • National pride: The trend raises questions about national identity and loyalty, with some viewing it as a betrayal.

  • Sports development: The exodus of athletes highlights the need for improved sports infrastructure and support in Nigeria.

Conclusion:

The representation of foreign countries by Nigerian indigenes in sports is a complex issue, driven by a mix of factors. While it brings individual success, it also underscores the need for Nigeria to invest in its sports sector, providing opportunities and support for its talented athletes to thrive and represent their country of origin with pride.
