POLITICAL ACTIVISIM
In my last newsletter post, I talked about a Nollywood movie I will be watching during the weekend. i.e. Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti, the movie enlightened me on the deeds and activist movements done by Mrs. Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti. It made me curious to research on past political activism done by past heroes.
After my research, only one question struck my mind. i.e. do we still have active political activists in Nigeria. Does Nigeria still have credible voices to fight for a change. This question triggered me to write about it in my next post, so as to enlighten you all on what I was able to gather on the topic and the current situation of the country when it comes to political activism.
Here is an article on the decline of political activism in Nigeria.
The Silence of Activists: The Fall of Political Activism in Nigeria.
In Nigeria, the people who used to speak out against injustice and demand good governance have become quieter. The movement that once pushed for positive change is losing steam.
Before we look at the causes, we should first have a good summary of our past political activists both in Pre-independence and post-independence and also what they were able to achieve with their activist movements.
Pre-independence Era:
1. Herbert Macauley (1864-1946): fought against British colonial rule, advocated for Nigeria independence.
2. Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti (1900-1978): pioneered women’s rights, anti-colonial activism, and democracy.
3. Nnamdi Azikwe (1904-1996): led the Nigerian people’s congress, fought for independence
4. Obafemi Awolowo (1909-1987): advocated for democracy, human rights, and federalism.
Post-independence Era:
1. Gani Fawehinmi (1938-2009): fought against military rule, promoted human rights and democracy.
2. Wole Soyinka (1934-Present): advocated for democracy, human rights, and criticized government against corruption.
3. Ken Saro-Wiwa (1941-1995): led the movement for the survival of the ogoni people, fought against environmental degradation.
4. Fela Kuti (1938-1997): popularly known as Baba Fela. Used music to criticized government corruption and advocate for human rights.
5. Balarabe Musa (1936-Present): fought against military rule, promoted socialism and democracy.
These activists made a name for themselves in Nigeria and will never be forgotten for their courage and bravery.
The courage and bravery these people had are what we are missing in Nigeria. Only few remarkable people are making movements that can bring about change. Political activism is now almost dead in Nigeria.
Why Is this happening?
· Some activists have joined the government and no longer criticize it
· The government has silenced others by force or intimation. That’s where the popular saying comes from “freedom of speech dey but freedom after speech I can’t assure you”.
· Activists are divided and no longer working together.
· Many are tired and discouraged due to lack of proper backing by the masses.
What the consequences?
· Corruption and bad leadership continue unchecked, now in large scale.
· The country progress is stalled.
· Democratic institutions are weakening.
Conclusion
Nigeria political activism is almost dead, but can still be revived. All we need is new voices to emerge, voices that can’t be tempted or give in to political or corruption benefits. Nigerians can regain their voice and demand better future; it is just nobody or only few is trying and with almost no back up by the masses.
NIGERIA KILL DREAMS!!!
Ah, Nigeria, land of promise and possibility…. Or so we thought!
Where dreams come to flourish… or wither away like a neglected plant.
From the bustling streets of Lagos to the vibrant markets of Abuja, Nigeria is a country that promises much, but often delivers little.
But hey, that’s what makes life interesting, right? The constant adventure of not knowing what’s going to happen next.
Join me on a journey as we explore the creative ways Nigeria kills our dreams (and our sanity). From the ever-innovative excuses of Nigerian politicians to the never-ending queues at the fuel-station,
From endless traffic jams to perpetual power outages, we will laugh, cry, and maybe even scream a little (just kidding…. Or am I?).
Nigeria, where the dreams come to life…and then promptly get stuck in traffic on the third mainland bridge.
Where the power of imagination is constantly interrupted by the power outage of reality.
Let’s dive into the mysterious world of Nigerian bureaucracy, where forms multiply like rabbits and paperwork disappears like magic.
Then explore the thrill of navigating Nigeria roads, where potholes are the national pastime and driving is an extreme sport.
And of course, not forget the unique art of Nigerian timekeeping, where 10 minutes means 1 hour and ‘soon’ means ‘maybe never’.
But despite the challenges, we will find a way to make it work…. Or at least that’s what we keep telling ourselves.
After all, as the great Nigerian philosopher (okay, maybe not so great) once said, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. And then wait for NEPA to take light, and you are back to square one!
So, buckle up, folks! It is going to be a wild ride, but we will get through it together…. Or maybe not, either way, it will be a great story to tell!
Movies to watch this weekend….
For most 9-5 people, they have less to do on weekends and eventually fail to enjoy it before resuming back to work on Monday. if you are one of them, why don’t you try these movies.
Oloture: The journey.
we have all watched Oloture in the past, but this is a more improved series that promises to deliver.
The Nollywood series is an intense social commentary on Nigeria that tells the story of a young undercover journalist who fights for her life while exposing the dark world of prostitution and human trafficking.
The series is a powerful and emotional depiction of the horrors of human trafficking and the desperation of people who migrate to Europe. The show features excellent performances from Sharon Ooja, Stan Nze and so on.
Supacell.
This is a Netflix series. A group of black south Londoners discovers that they have superpowers. now it is down to one man to bring them all together to save the woman he loves.
It is one of the series that have seen almost 100% reviews so far on Netflix.
Visa on Approval.
This is a Nollywood comedy series, where four immigration officers with contrasting personalities decides the fate of visa applicants; Religious fanatic Charity, bribe-taking Okoro, narcissist Francis and no-nonsense Hope. with the last season introducing the Sophia Alakija into the mix as Flora. it is a series that has delivered from the first season to the Third season. You should try it.

Flooding in Lagos….
On Wednesday, a 10-hour downpour hit parts of Lagos and Ogun state, causing significant flooding and disruption to daily life.
A lot happened on that very day and Lagosian felt the impact on a large scale. some of the major things that happened on that very day due to massive flooding:
A two-storey building collapsed in the Mushin area of Lagos, injuring seven people.
Roads and houses were flooded across the city, including areas like Iyana-oworo, Agege, Gbagada, and Lagos island.
Major roads such as Majek, Abraham Adesanya, and Awoyaya-Sangotedo were also impacted, with ongoing road construction further worsening the situation.
Schools were closed, non-essential travel was discouraged due to the hazardous conditions.
The Lagos state government deployed the emergency flood abatement gang to critical areas and advised residents in low-lying areas to relocate to higher grounds.
The flooding was attributed to the heavy rainfall and inadequate drainage systems, with residents calling for improved infrastructure to address the recurring issue.
Despite the large amount of flooding, some Lagosians were caught red-handed dumping refuse into the flood. Though proper actions has been taken by the state to sanction those apprehended, but Lagosians still need to be educated on the consequences of dumping refuse into the flood when there is heavy downpour.
