Weren’t We Just Kids a Few Years Ago?

Isn’t it funny how life comes at you fast? One minute you’re playing outside with your friends, building castles out of sand, and pretending to be a superhero, and the next minute, you're in a suit trying to convince a hiring manager that you're qualified to be an “Operations Manager” (whatever that means). You stop, look around, and think, "Weren’t we just kids a few years ago?" It’s as if life hit fast forward and forgot to tell you.

Remember when our biggest worries were missing the latest episode of a cartoon show or figuring out which ice cream flavor to pick? Now, it’s balancing rent, career ambitions, and the fine art of pretending you know what you're doing in meetings. Like, when did that switch happen? When did we become the adults we used to be so impressed by? Spoiler alert: we’re still winging it.

You see, adulthood doesn’t arrive with a manual. It doesn’t even give you a heads-up that it's coming. One day you’re turning 18 and thinking you’ve got all the time in the world, and suddenly you’re in your 20s or 30s, wondering why your back hurts after sitting in a chair for too long. Did we miss a memo?

What’s more confusing is that even though we're adults now, we’re still those kids deep down. The same kids who used to giggle uncontrollably at silly jokes, cry when our toys broke, and dream of a future filled with adventure. Only now, those giggles have turned into sarcastic chuckles during stressful workdays, the toys we cry over are our phones, and our adventures? They’re more like a desperate search for a work-life balance.

But there's a beauty in the madness. In between all the responsibilities and pressures, there’s something heartwarming about realizing we’re all in this together, trying to figure out life as it comes. The phrase "weren’t we just kids a few years ago" is both a cry of nostalgia and a badge of survival. It’s a reminder that life may change, but the essence of who we are—the curious, wide-eyed kids full of hope—never really leaves us.

So, as we struggle with adulthood, maybe we should cut ourselves some slack. Maybe it’s okay to still feel like a kid sometimes, to laugh, to mess up, and to wonder when we’re going to finally “get it together.” Maybe life isn’t about having it all figured out. Maybe it’s about embracing that feeling of being a little lost, a little nostalgic, and a lot human.

And who knows? Maybe a few years from now, we’ll look back at today and think, “Weren’t we just figuring out adulthood a few years ago?” The cycle continues.
